Merlot, the name comes from the French diminutive robin probably because of its similarity to black plumage. The Merlot varietal is known for its fineness and softness, while being aromatic and meaty. It is intense ruby color, medium, and aging graduation quickly without losing quality. The merlot is from the Bordeaux region, where it is the most cultivated variety. It has become an international variety, the second most popular red variety after Cabernet Sauvignon, used mostly as a variety of improvement in racking to provide softness and balance. It is present in the vast majority of D.O. Peninsula.

Characteristics of Merlot wine

Although it is often thought of as a grape used to make young wines, this variety is also capable of excellent aging in the bottle over time. Merlot wines are mainly characterised by a soft and sweet flavour.

Merlot wines are the perfect partner for poultry, beef and even casseroles. They are also great for pairing with creamy French cheeses like camembert and stronger flavoured cheeses like Parmesan and even blue cheeses.

Originally from one of the first wine regions in France, Bordeaux, it is the most common grape in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.

Varieties similar to Merlot

Being the offspring of Cabernet Franc and Magdeleine Noire des Charentes, Merlot wines can be very similar to these in their flavours and aromas. This variety is also very similar to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is so similar, in fact, that even top wine experts have mistaken one for the other.
