About Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc I 2020
Most of the time, competition makes us bring our best. We cannot rest on our laurels when someone next to us is giving their all. Something very like this happens with Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten, a vineyard in western Germany, in the Palatinate. Here, with a very high planting density, the vines must compete with each other for resources, perhaps producing very few grapes, but ones that are very high quality. Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc I is made with some of these harvests.
The creators of this white wine, one of the highest quality in the area, are the Von Winning winery: a heavyweight in the world of wines. Founded in 1794, Von Winning is one of the most traditional wineries in the country. From generation to generation the company has been passed down from parents to children, until 2007 when the Niedesberger Group took over the family vineyard under the leadership of Stephan Attmann. However, the true hallmarks of this house are its wood fermentations and aging on lees.
At Von Winning, most of their 42 hectares of vineyards are planted with the Riesling variety, facing east, worked intensively and naturally. The soils are mixed and diverse, with red and yellow sandstones, limestone, basalt and other types of rock. The almost Mediterranean climate, with an average of 1,800 hours of sunshine per year, makes it one of the warmest and driest regions in the country.
In the 1960s the Palatinate was associated with cheap, uninteresting wines. But that’s no longer the case. Today, some of the best whites in the world are made in this area. And Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc I is one of them.
2020 | Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc I 2020 is a very seductive white that is delicate and powerful and straw yellow in colour with golden touches. The nose is very mineral, with smoky notes and very juicy white fruit (pear, peach, apple, lemon). The palate is mineral, elegant and dense, with juicy and smoky fruit. Well balanced acidity. Fresh and concentrated. Delicious finish. |
