About Vinas Mora Barbba

Did you know that Barbba means "uncle" in the local Croatian dialect? This wine pays homage to those who have tended these rocky vineyards for centuries, where the vines literally cling to life on limestone and dolomite. The vineyards are divided into small plots, shielded by dry stone walls that combat the constant wind and aid the roots in seeking water deep below.

The story of Vinas Mora—which in Croatian means "wine of the sea"—is a blend of passion, serendipity, and adventure. Kreso Petreković, a former sommelier and distributor in New York, was at his coastal home in Primošten when the pandemic began. Inspired by the terroir, the babić grape, and the homemade wines of local farmers, he decided to bring a unique project to life after tasting wines made "the old-fashioned way" by Josip and Neno Marinov, two vintners selling in plastic bottles by the roadside... a true hidden gem!

Vinas Mora Barbba is a special and distinctive wine. A blend of white grapes (Debito and Marastina) and red grapes (Plavina and Lasin) with a very short maceration, lasting less than an afternoon with their skins. The organic grapes come from vineyards near Šibenik, in the Promina area, where the red clay soil with limestone imparts freshness and minerality. In the winery, the fermentation of Vinas Mora Barbba is carried out naturally in open 1,000-litre barrels, unfiltered and with very little sulphur before bottling.

Vinas Mora Barbba is a unique rosé from the Balkans that deserves a leisurely tasting, to gradually uncover all its character and soul. A true tribute to those "uncles" of the land who, generation after generation, have tended these vines with patience, wisdom, and unwavering love.
