About Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Caiño

Each creator has their own style and a unique thread that unites each of their projects. When it comes to the world of wine, each producer has a way of working and understanding the land, the vineyard and the winery, which is reflected in how they make their wines. Rodrigo Méndez is one of the most influential producers in the Rías Baixas region, and the common thread in all his projects is the production of wines that reflect the identity and essence of the area where they are made, with a focus on quality, sustainability and authenticity. To this end, he recovers the tradition and classic style of winemaking from decades ago and combines these with the most advanced and modern production techniques. In other words, he fuses the best of the past and the present to create unique and distinctive wines. This is clear to see in his most personal project, Rodrigo Méndez. A small winery bearing his own name whose wines radiate sincerity and loyalty to the terroir.

One example of his work is Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Caiño, a red wine made with the native Caíño variety from a vineyard planted with his friend, winemaker Carlos Pazo, which is located in Castrelo (Salnés Valley) and practically on the edge of the Atlantic Sea. An estate of only 1.5 hectares with soils composed of sand and granitic kaolin. The grapes are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and, once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually and taken to the winery. There, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation in open steel tanks with 15 days of skin-contact maceration. The wine then ages in used barrels for 12 months and is bottled unfiltered.

With a limited production of just over a thousand bottles, Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Caiño maintains the common denominator of all the wines made by this prestigious Galician winemaker. An Atlantic red wine that shows its authentic self. Easy to drink, with good acidity and no masks or gimmicks.

Rodrigo Méndez O Raio da Vella Caiño 2019 is a smooth red wine with aromas of fresh red fruit, spicy notes and mineral hints. On the palate it is fresh, juicy and balanced. A wine with vibrant acidity, a pleasant mid-palate and a slightly salty finish.
