About Viña Real La Virgen

In 1879, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa established the CVNE winery in the town of Haro, within the distinguished region of La Rioja Alta. Today, five generations later, the winery continues to operate at full capacity, proudly carrying the name of La Rioja across the globe. And it must be acknowledged: they are doing an exceptional job. It can be said that they have proven their worth time and again. Now, the time has come to strive for improvement, to go beyond the familiar, and to achieve excellence. And this magnificence is epitomized by Viña Real La Virgen.
 
The quest for the quintessential expression of the tempranillo grape was the driving force behind the oenologists at CVNE when crafting this red wine, formerly known as Pagos de Viña Real. Now, several years on, its name has changed, yet its essence remains unaltered, drawn directly from the La Virgen vineyard. This particular two-hectare plot, with its clay soils and pebbles, is situated near the village of La Bastida, at the foothills of Mount Toloño. This location is quite unique, as the vines are completely sheltered. Here, the days are warm and moist, with temperatures dropping at night, resulting in a slow ripening process and a robust concentration of anthocyanins (polyphenols located in the grape skins that color the berry).
 
Viña Real La Virgen will undergo a rigorous double selection process. Initially, the first screening takes place in the vineyard at the time of harvest, where only the finest clusters will be picked. The work will primarily be done using 20-kilogram boxes, ensuring this capacity is not exceeded to prevent crushing and juice extraction. The second selection occurs once inside the winery, just before the crusher, when the grapes of Viña Real La Virgen are crushed and processed. This crucial step will produce a must that will be transferred into fermentation tanks. Viña Real La Virgen will ferment naturally with indigenous yeasts, and daily punch-downs will be performed. Additionally, the temperature at which these microorganisms work will be meticulously controlled.
 
Finally, Viña Real La Virgen will undergo a warm maceration for a couple of days, complete malolactic fermentation, and will be aged for 12 months in barrels. On this endless journey in pursuit of excellence, Viña Real La Virgen stands out as one of the finest milestones!
