About Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda

Is it because of the volcanic soils? Or does it have something to do with the long hot summers? We don’t know; but new from southern Italy comes Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda, a red wine produced by the Feudi di San Gregorio winery, within the D.O.C.G. Fiano di Avelino in Sorbo Serpico (Campania).

This area, located at the foot of the Apennines, is traditionally known as Irpina, a place full of nuances and crops of all kinds. Vineyards have been growing here since Roman times, making them the living history of a tradition that is still alive today. This is thanks in part to companies like Feudi di San Gregorio, who have set out to recover all these expressions and forms of winemaking. With this in mind, the winery has made Selezioni, a collection of wines including Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda.

The key to this whole story is the Fiano, a variety typical of southern Italy, with low yields, which adapts perfectly to the volcanic and clay-limestone soils found here. Here, at the foot of the Apennines, this winery owns the Pietracalda vineyard, an 8-hectare plot planted between 400 and 700 metres above sea level. This will have a clear influence on the vines, as temperatures become much more extreme (both in summer and winter), influencing the ripening of the clusters.

After the harvest, Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda is taken to the winery and pressed at low pressures to make the must. From there, the Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda juice is transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation begins. Once this process is completed, Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda continues in these same tanks, where it ages for 4 to 5 months. During this time, Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda stays in contact with its lees (the dead yeasts) and periodically undergoes battonnage and stirring.

2022 Feudi di San Gregorio Pietracalda is a white wine with pleasant floral aromas on the nose, with just-cut fresh fruit and candied citron (a citrus fruit very similar to lemon). The palate flows with lively freshness and delicious minerality. A refreshing and pleasant white wine that is perfect for discovering the qualities of the Fiano variety.
