About Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina del Sannio

There is little, if anything, new under the sun. The Romans took care of that. I’m sure that anything you can think of, they already came up with (even in the field of oenology). This empire, whose western part fell in 476, already knew about different types of soil, classifying its various plots in what is known today as cru. This is also what they do with Vino Falerno, a white wine considered one of the best, made from the Aglianico or Falanghina grape on the slopes of Mount Falerno (now known as Mount Massico), in Campania. Some wineries in the area, like Feudi di San Gregorio, are now reviving these wines.

In this case, it could not be any other way, since this winery, founded in the province of Avellino in 1986 after the great earthquake that devastated the area, is one of the main protagonists in the resurgence of wine in southern Italy. For this reason, some of this winery’s 300 hectares lie in the D.O.C. Falanghina del Sannio (in the province of Benevento), where Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina del Sannio is produced. Many consider this Denominazione di'Origine Controllata an Umbrella D.O.C., since it produces a wide variety of wines, both white and red. The soils, mostly clay-limestone-siliceous, help to achieve this. So do the summers (short, dry and hot) and winters (long, cold and cloudy). All of this is of course influenced by its proximity to the Apennines, which will act as a barrier, altering and moderating the temperatures.

Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina is harvested and arrives at the winery, where it will be processed and crushed. After pressing, where the must is made, Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina del Sannio is left to rest in the cold, allowing the particles that are suspended in the wine to precipitate and cleanse. From there, it is time to rack it to stainless steel tanks (where it will ferment at 16°C to 18°C). Once it has become wine, Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina del Sannio is aged for 5 months in the same tanks, where it will be in contact with its yeasts.

After this, Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina del Sannio is bottled and ready to bring back to the palate the memories of the primitive wines of the Sannio region.
