About Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

In 1789, after the French Revolution, many religious properties were expropriated and given to civilians. France’s most renowned vineyards were part of this and, following auctions and high bids, the bourgeoisie managed to become owners of these gems (many of them hidden for years behind the walls of abbeys and monasteries). This is what happened in the northwest of France, in Gevrey-Chambertin, where the properties that belonged to the clergymen of the Lagrés municipality for years were divided up into many small plots of land with very unique characteristics. One of them is Charmes-Chambertin, classified as a grand cru, which today produces Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.

Bringing this historic wine into being is down to Philippe Charlopin, the creator of this single-variety Pinot Noir, made by one of Burgundy’s greatest makers. Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru starts life in the plot of the same name, which is considered one of the area’s most special terroirs. Silkiness, volume and body are the characteristic features of these reds, considered by some as the king of wines. In fact the reds from this area, made like Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, were some of the favourite bottles of historical figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and Thomas Jefferson (they say that following his order, a hundred dozen Burgundy Chambertin were kept in the White House basement).

Bringing out the full potential and energy of this grand cru, with very deep, brown calcareous soils, is the responsibility of Philippe Charlopin, who knows the terroir of the area to perfection. With the help of his son Yann Charlopin, this master winemaker manages to produce reds that are going down in history and that have helped him make a name for himself in winemaking history. In general, his style has gone through several phases (complete destemming, then vinifications with stems, use of new wood, change to old wood, etc.) however, Philippe Charlopin has always remained faithful to his style, always based on biodynamics. This holistic and natural approach is the unwavering basis on which the entire winemaking process is based, with manual work and harvesting, no chemicals or phytosanitary products, controlling yields and allowing the vines to express themselves. This is how he gets the best version of each variety.

Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is aged in oak barrels, where new and used barrels are combined. Depending on the final result, Philippe Charlopin will choose one material or the other, bringing different touches and profiles that will vary from vintage to vintage. This is the only way to achieve a wine as unique and special as Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
