About Carl Ehrhard Old School Riesling trocken

Although Carl Ehrhard embodies the new generation of German winemakers who are committed to dry wines from classic grape varieties, the ups and downs of life have influenced him in his approach to life and winemaking. The son of a winegrower, he never got along well with his father and for two years he sought refuge far away in South Africa. Then, after taking on a strenuous job in Germany, he took a break and took over his father’s company on the premise of taking his time with things. This was reinforced to him after his wife was involved in a serious bicycle accident that almost left her completely paralysed. So they only began to sell their Riesling two years after the harvest, and with the slogan “back to the future” they stopped vinifying in stainless steel to use wooden barrels from a couple of generations ago to go one step further with the micro-oxidation of their wines.

Carl Ehrhard Old School Riesling trocken is a Riesling that comes from vineyards located in the Rüdesheimer Berg, one of the best plots on this mountain in the VDP Rheingau where the vines are cultivated in a sustainable biodynamic way. The vineyards are ideally situated on the gentle slopes, protected from the cold north winds by the Taunus Mountains and with the Rhine River acting as a temperature regulator. Once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested by hand in a very selective manner and then carefully sorted when they reach the winery. After a gentle pressing, the resulting must ferments naturally and spontaneously without any additives. The wine then matures in wood for at least 2-3 months on fine lees before bottling.

The result is Carl Ehrhard Old School Riesling trocken, a pure and stimulating Riesling in a predominantly dry (‘trocken’) style that retains the conceptual essence of the old school and with a view to enjoying it at the table.

Carl Ehrhard Old School Riesling trocken 2020 is an aromatic white wine exuding scents of white stone fruit, tropical fruit, and green fruit. On the palate, it is zesty, invigorating, and flavorsome. A wine characterized by its luminous acidity and an exceptionally exquisite balance.
