International Tempranillo Day, the flagship variety of Spain

12/11/2020 Winemaking

The International Tempranillo Day is celebrated this 12th November. These wines have positioned regions such as its birthplace, the DOCa. Rioja, as one of the most important wine regions in the world.

In 2011, TAPAS (Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society), a non-profit trade association dedicated to the promotion of the Tempranillo grape, other native varieties of the Iberian Peninsula and the wines made from them, organized the first International Tempranillo Day, a celebration where the Tempranillo grape and all its regional synonyms are recognized by promoting their qualities and inviting everyone to uncork Tempranillo wine and share the experience on social media with the #TempranilloDay or #Tempranillo tags.

tempranillo

The Tempranillo grape is the most widely cultivated red variety in Spain, where it’s also known as Tinto de Toro, Tinto del País, Ull de Llebre, Tinto Fino, Cencibel… and it’s the flagship variety in renowned wine-growing regions such as DOCa. Rioja, DO Ribera del Duero and DO Toro. In Portugal it’s known as Tinta Roriz.

The Tempranillo grape, being a variety widely spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula, has also managed to captivate the whole world and increase its cultivation. Today we can find Tempranillo vineyards in countries such as France, the United States, Chile and Argentina

This variety has achieved such international acceptance due to it being capable of reflecting the personality of the terroir where it’s grown, which is why it can give rise to versatile, elegant wines which are very different from each other, according to where they come from.

Below we suggest 5 great wines so you can celebrate International Tempranillo Day and toast in style!

5 sides of the Tempranillo variety in 5 wines

1.- Pago de los Capellanes Crianza

Pago capellanes

Pago de los Capellanes is one of the flagship wineries of the Ribera del Duero DO. They make this Pago de los Capellanes Crianza exclusively with bunches of the Tinto Fino variety which come from vines around 30 years old and ferment under selected yeasts from the winery’s own vineyards. A delicate and perfectionist manufacture which results in a very frank, balanced and elegant wine.

2.- Abel Mendoza Tempranillo Grano a Grano

Abel Mendoza

This Tempranillo red wine is made from bunches which are de-stemmed one by one, hence its name, which come from vineyards over fifty years old located in the famous area of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in La Rioja Alta. A French-style wine where the freshness of the fruit is balanced with the intensity of the barrel. A highly sought-after red wine, curious, elegant and of very limited production.

3.- Emilio Moro

Emilio Moro

More than 70 years’ experience stand behind Bodega Emilio Moro, which has skillfully linked tradition and modernity. This Emilio Moro wine is the flagship of the winery, which was named in his honor and which offers us an intense, agreeable and flavorsome modern cut red wine. In short, a great wine at a very reasonable price.

4.- Pintia

Pintia

Words are unnecessary when talking about Pintia. A worthy member of the Tempos Vega Sicilia family which contributes to making the DO Toro shine with splendor on the wine map. For many, it’s one of those treasures yet to be discovered. A red wine which preserves the intensity and character of Toro but dresses it with elegance and sensuality. Unquestionably a red wine from Toro to surprise and always make a good impression.

5.- Marqués de Murrieta Reserva

Marqués Murrieta

The Marqués de Murrieta Reserva wine isn’t a monovarietal Tempranillo and is an example of the classic Rioja style which has managed to give deserved world fame to this wine region and its flagship variety, product of one of the great wineries and quite a name of the DOCa. Rioja. Coupage of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano and with a touch of Garnacha, it’s a wine of excellence, with an elegant blend between fruit and the casky taste. Totally irresistible and it never goes out of style!

At Decántalo you’ll find a wide range of Tempranillo wines for you to compare and continue enjoying all the sides of this renowned and versatile variety.
