About Viuda Negra Arca de Asa

By the banks of the Vinaspre stream, very close to the Rioja municipality of Lanciego, lies a very special plot planted with tempranillo, on clay-limestone soils. Its owners, Julio and his wife, always cultivated it with a single desire: to produce their own wine; however, harvest after harvest, and due to various circumstances, the grapes always ended up being sold to the cooperative. Time passed, but the dream did not fade, and before the couple passed away, their granddaughter was able to learn of that desire. 
 
Today, more than just a wine, Viuda Negra Arca de Asa is a promise that continues to be fulfilled thanks to the efforts of Javier San Pedro and the granddaughter of that couple, who is currently his wife. The combination could not have been better since, from a young age, Javier San Pedro Ortega has also experienced wine in a very unique way. With the knowledge of his grandfather (from whom he learned everything) and a new vision (much more modern and contemporary), this young man represents the fifth generation of a family rooted in Laguardia, a village in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. However, this new chapter in the saga goes beyond the borders of this village and, although everything remains within the family, it ventures into other places that compel him to work outside his comfort zone. 
 
For Javier San Pedro Ortega and his family, Viuda Negra Arca de Asa is a very special estate wine that takes its name from an ancient reservoir (known in the area as Arca) that collected the waters of the Assa river (Asa in Basque). This sea of vineyards, where the tempranillo variety predominates, stretches to the northwest of the Ebro river where clay-limestone soils prevail, providing the ideal foundation for the vines that mature under the protection of the Sierra de Cantabria. The location of this mountain range is crucial as it shields the vineyard from the cold and moisture of the Cantabrian, enhancing the dry and sunny weather typical of the Atlantic climate. The harvest of Viuda Negra Arca de Asa is carried out manually in small boxes and vinified in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, where it will rest for less than a year. 
 
From one generation to the next, Viuda Negra Arca de Asa is born, a red wine that reminds us not only of where we come from, but how far we have come thanks to the work of our ancestors.
