Tasting notes Unicum Liqueur 70cl
Liqueurs (70 cl.).
Unicum is an intense and aromatic herbal liqueur, where elegant bitterness intertwines with notes of orange peel, pine, liquorice, and clove, concluding with a slightly sweet and mentholated finish. Traditionally served as an aperitif or digestif, it is enjoyed chilled in a shot or as a base for characterful cocktails. Its complexity invites a pause and contemplation of its history, linking Hungarian tradition with a pleasure to be savoured slowly with each sip.
About Unicum Liqueur
Can a spirit born in an imperial court preserve its secret for over two centuries? The legend of Unicum Licor de Hierbas begins in 1790, when Dr. József Zwack, physician to Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg, presented his majesty with an herbal liqueur so distinctive it elicited an exclamation destined to become its name and destiny: Das ist ein Unikum! (This is unique!). Since then, this Hungarian elixir has continued to inspire curiosity, reverence, and a certain silent devotion.
Unicum is the liquid reflection of the Zwack family's legacy, a saga that has withstood wars, exiles, nationalisations, and rebirths without ever forsaking its essence. For over 230 years, generation after generation has safeguarded a secret recipe as a family treasure, keeping alive a tradition deeply intertwined with Hungary and its digestive culture. Even in the darkest moments of its history, Unicum found a way to survive... and return home.
Crafted from a complex blend of over 40 medicinal and aromatic herbs and spices sourced from five continents, Unicum is produced following a meticulous artisanal process. The herbs are still measured by hand today, some even dosed by members of the Zwack family themselves. After maceration and distillation —key to its unmistakable aroma—, the liqueur is assembled and aged in oak casks, where it acquires its deep, bitter, and perfectly balanced character. Each batch is overseen and approved by the Master Distiller alongside a tasting panel in which the family continues to have a voice.
Unicum Licor de Hierbas is an experience that invites pause: ideal as a digestif after a hearty meal, during a leisurely after-dinner conversation, or as a personal ritual at the end of the day. Its intense and herbal profile does not seek to please everyone but to captivate those who appreciate authenticity, tradition, and flavours with history. More than a liqueur, Unicum is a national symbol, an iconic bottle, and a well-guarded secret that, generation after generation, continues to speak the language of time.
