About The Smuggler's Boot Pinot Noir

The Smuggler’s Boot Pinot Noir is a barrel-aged red wine made with the Pinot Noir variety in the Western Cape South Coast area, South Africa, by Richard Kershaw.

Richard Kershaw Wines is the personal project of one of the ten Masters of Wine who make their own wines. The winery was set up in 2012 in the Elgin Valley, chosen because it is the coolest part of the Western Cape. This great guru works to make fresh wines by using noble varieties that suit the area’s rocky soils and climate. One example of his work is the Smuggler’s Boot range, which is a tribute to a time of commercial embargoes when producers and winemakers smuggled vine cuttings into the country by hiding them in Wellington boots.

Surrounded by mountains and close to the sea, The Smuggler’s Boot Pinot Noir vines enjoy a cool climate all year round. They are cultivated using environmentally-respectful agriculture and the strain yield is limited to achieve quality and concentration. The harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness.

Once The Smuggler’s Boot Pinot Noir grapes have been selected on the winery conveyor belt, they are destemmed and allowed to macerate for 3 days in open 500 kg tanks. The grapes are then crushed to begin spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in a combination of new French oak barrels and breathable plastic eggs. A gentle punch down programme is carried out and the grapes stay with their skins for 10-16 days. Once fermentation has finished, the wine ages for 11 months in barrels and is finally bottled with a light filtration.

The Smuggler’s Boot Pinot Noir is made by Richard Kershaw himself, an international wine guru who has used his winemaking knowledge to produce a wine with a modern profile and notable freshness and length.
2016 The Smuggler’s Boot Pinot Noir 2016 is a smooth red wine with aromas of fresh red fruit and spicy touches of star anise. On the palate it is juicy, flavoursome and meandering. It has a sharp acidity, a balanced flavour and a long and very fluid finish.
