About Vinyes Domènech Teixar Garnatxa Vella

Teixar is an organic, single-variety Garnacha Peluda red wine made by the Vinyes Domènech winery in the D.O. Montsant, Catalonia.

The Teixar wine is made from 100% Garnacha Peluda, a grape that is the result of a mutation of the Garnacha Negra and is named as such because the lower part of the vine’s leaves are covered by a kind of hair. Garnacha Peluda is usually even more subtle than Garnacha Negra and produces very elegant wines.

The vines grow on soils composed of calcareous material with stony areas. The soils are shallow and poor in organic matter. These Garnacha Peluda vines are over 70 years old and planted on 15º slopes facing north to south.

The vineyards are organically cultivated following the principles of biodynamic agriculture. Every aspect of the viticulture is done by hand because the plots are hard to access and because they want to be able to carry out a selective harvest in the vineyard itself. The grapes are harvested early in the morning to avoid high temperatures and to preserve the integrity of the bunches, which are immediately taken to the winery.

Because of its high quality, Teixar has been named a “Vi de Finca”, the highest classification for a wine produced in Catalonia, even above “Vinos de Pago”. It is currently the only wine in this category in the D.O. Montsant and one of only 11 in the whole of Catalonia.

2017 Teixar 2017 is a red wine exuding a delightful aromatic complexity, featuring blackcurrants, blackberries, and ripe cherries. As the wine breathes, it begins to unfold, revealing hints of aniseed and menthol nuances. Gradually, pepper and liquorice emerge, along with rosemary and lavender. On the palate, it is succulent and velvety. The red fruit remains in the spotlight, complemented by spicy and balsamic notes, and a precise, invigorating acidity. An exemplary red wine, it elegantly showcases all the virtues of the hairy grenache.

Very intense and expressive, with a fresh nose in which the balsamic notes share centre stage with the abundant fruit, along with an expressive minerality, good toasted notes, spices, chocolate and licorice on a good background of aromatic herbs from the Mediterranean forest.
