About Sierra de Toloño Camino de Santa Cruz

Did you know that in Rioja, the most unruly vineyards are perched at the highest altitudes? Yes, precisely where the air is crisp, the wind blows fiercely, and the roots tenaciously cling to the impoverished soils. On the rugged slopes of the Sierra de Toloño (formerly known as Sierra de Cantabria), lies a fresh interpretation of Rioja. Wilder, more genuine... more alive.

This is where Sandra Bravo chose to lay down roots. A restless oenologist who, after traversing the globe (Bordeaux, Tuscany, New Zealand, California... and seven intense years in Priorat), returned to her homeland with a clear vision: to craft wines with soul, respecting the vineyard, the landscape, and the altitude. And not through power, but through subtlety. In her small winery in Villabuena de Álava, she treats each plot as a treasure.

Her project, Sierra de Toloño, is a tribute to the mountain, the extreme climate, and the character of a land that demands patience and sensitivity. Among all her wines, one that best encapsulates this philosophy is Sierra de Toloño Camino de Santa Cruz.

A single-parcel tempranillo, cultivated in the field of Rivas, at an altitude of 600 metres. The fermentation takes place in clay amphorae, a nod to ancestral methods, allowing for a natural, gentle micro-oxygenation without interference. Afterwards, the wine rests in 500-litre barrels, gaining depth without losing freshness.

The result is Sierra de Toloño Camino de Santa Cruz, a wine that doesn't shout, but leaves a lasting impression. Elegant, expressive, with vigour and a mountain soul. Like Sandra. Like the Sierra. Like the new Rioja that many of us have been eagerly awaiting.

Sierra de Toloño Camino de Santa Cruz 2020 epitomises the essence of Rioja Alavesa. Upon serving, an intense red hue captivates the eye. On the nose, seductive floral aromas unfold alongside an explosion of red fruits such as cherries and blackberries. These intertwine with subtle mineral notes and a hint of herbs like thyme, evoking mountainous landscapes. The oak ageing imparts body and structure, while balancing its concentrated profile. This wine is distinguished by its elegance and promises to evolve beautifully in the bottle, making it an excellent choice for both immediate enjoyment and ageing for future delight.
