About Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada

Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada is a red wine made by Bodega Sierra Cantabria in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a small town located at the foot of Sierra Cantabria in D.O. La Rioja.

Bodega Sierra Cantabria is owned by the Eguren family who are also owners of Bodega Teso la Monja in D.O. Toro, and other smaller wineries in Rioja like Señorío San Vicente, Dominio de Eguren and Viñedos de Páganos.

Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada is a single variety Tempranillo. The grapes are grown in two vineyards more than 50 years old owned by the winery, Finca Los Terreros and Jararte, both located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra very close to the River Ebro.
They can be found at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level and in limestone-clay soils, poor with a lot of stones, gravel and sediment that are good for drainage.
This area has various types of climates. Atlantic, Mediterranean and Continental. Three very different influences that experience diverse climatic situations with not mild winters and summers, with a lot of difference in temperature between the day and the night.

Bodega Sierra Cantabria works in the vineyards respecting the rhythms of nature, following the influence from the stars and showing a great respect for the environment.
They only use organic fertilisers.

The harvest is done by hand in 20 kg crates so that the grapes arrive in perfect condition at the winery. They undergo a thorough selection process in the vineyards and they collect only the bunches that are in perfect conditions and ripeness. Once in the winery, there is a second selection on selection tables.

The selected grapes ferment in small 1000 litre oak vats and traditional treading is performed twice daily at the beginning of fermentation and once a day in the final days.
This way there is a soft extraction of the must.
The fermentation is done with local yeast from their own vineyards and at a controlled temperature at 23 ºC.

Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada undergoes an aging for 18 months in new French and American oak barrels.

A marvellous Riojan wine. Convincing but delicate. A lot of fruit and a great aging in the barrel. A wine with a lot of personality.
