About Saxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon
The Apartheid system of racial segregation that was in force in South Africa until 1992 brought, among many other horrible consequences, the slowdown of the wine industry. This embargo significantly reduced both the export of South African wines and the import of new technologies that were being used in Europe. But once these laws were abolished, the country reopened to the world and quickly became the ninth largest wine producer. Behind this growth are the Bührers, a Swiss family who arrived in the Stellenbosch wine region in 1989 and with perseverance and passion achieved their dream of creating their own wine project: Saxenburg. This became one of the oldest estates in the Cape and the most international producers of the Syrah variety in South Africa.
In addition to their famous Syrahs, Saxemburg also experiments with other varieties imported from the old world like Merlot, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. With this latter variety, they make Saxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that comes from three different estates, all of which enjoy the unique climate provided by the intersection of the Indian and Atlantic oceans. Once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested and taken to the winery. Fermentation takes place in open tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC with a 3-week maceration and regular pumping over. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, 40% are second year barrels and the rest are third year barrels.
Part of the private family collection, Saxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly a treasure of the winery. A balanced and full-bodied cuvée that brings us up to date with what is happening in the southernmost part of Africa.
2015 |
Saxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of red fruit, spicy notes and hints of tobacco. On the palate it is full-bodied, complex and balanced. A wine with good tannin structure and a pleasant finish with an aftertaste of mocha. |
