About Santiago Ruiz Albariño
Santiago Ruiz Albariño is a young white wine made by Santiago Ruiz with the Albariño, Treixadura, Godello, Loureira Blanca and Caíño Blanco varieties in the D.O. Rías Baixas.
Santiago Ruiz is considered the father of Albariño for being the first to bottle and sell Galician wines made with this variety. He inherited this project from his maternal grandfather and has been adapting it over the years to fit in with today’s world. The original winery, a 17th-century building near the mouth of the Miño River, sits alongside a new 21st-century building in the town of Tomiño. Two clear examples of his desire to unite tradition and modernity.
Santiago Ruiz Albariño comes from a 38 hectare south-facing vineyard lying at an altitude of 50-75 metres above sea level. The strains are aged between 15 and 20 years old planted in sandy-loam alluvial soils with a granite base. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, the harvest is carried out manually by variety in 20 kg boxes.
Once they reach the winery, the Santiago Ruiz Albariño grapes are classified on the selection table. Then each variety is fermented separately at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks for 21 days. It then ages on lees before the final coupage is made.
Considered one of the fathers of Albariño, Santiago Ruiz has created a white wine with an intensity, freshness and complexity that is so typical of the O Rosal style.
