About Roagna Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti

Roagna Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is a monovarietal Nebbiolo red wine from the DOCG Barolo produced by the Roagna winery.

Roagna is a winery in Barbaresco, in the Piedmont area, which has old vines in historic vineyards. Its principles involve replanting the failures in its vineyards by following the Massale system, using plant material from the vineyard itself and not buying cuttings from nurseries. It promotes biodiversity in its plots by letting the grass proliferate in them, ferment at all times with wild yeasts in wooden vats, performing long macerations and ageing its wines without making them woody. It does not filter or clarify its wines, and bottles them adding very few sulphites.

The plot for Roagna Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti covers an approximate area of 4.9 hectares. The upper part of the vineyard is protected by the Rocche di Castiglione and the lower part by a forest and a stream that flows from Bussia to Monforte d'Alba. It is the same plot as the Roagna Barolo Pira but, on being divided into subplots, in the Roagna Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti they only use grapes from vines that were planted in 1937 or earlier. The grapes are harvested by hand early in the morning and transported in the cellar in small containers.

The Roagna Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti harvest is selected manually in the field and in the cellar, discarding any bunches with defects that could damage the quality of the wine. Once vatted it ferments in oak vats with native yeasts. The fermentation process continues for some 10 days and then the wine macerates with the skins for about two and a half to three months. Lastly, the wine is aged in neutral oak barrels for approximately 5 years.

The production of Roagna Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is limited, usually to about 2,000 bottles per year. Each of them is numbered on the label.
