About Pujanza Añadas Frías

Getting a good vintage depends on many factors. A large part of the responsibility falls to the vineyard. The location of the vines, the composition of the soil and the treatments applied by the winegrower are essential to determine the success of a good wine. But there’s also a condition that will determine the time it takes for the grape to ripen and, with it, the degree of acidity it will contain. This is the weather. As a general rule, in vintages where temperatures have been lower, the acidity of the fruit increases and the wines have a better cellaring capacity. This is what happens in Pujanza Añadas Frías, a 100% Viura white wine which, as its name suggests, is only made in the coldest vintages.

Created by Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza in the municipality of Laguardia, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, in Álava (Basque Country), this white wine is the result of the experience accumulated over three generations at D.O.Ca. Rioja. Taking into account that the grape is the main protagonist, it comes from 1.5 hectares planted in 1989 on calcareous clay soils at more than 550 meters above sea level. This is a grape which is vinified only in cold vintages in new oak barrels of 225 l. and 500 l. and aged for up to 12 months.

As Pujanza Añadas Frías is made in specific vintages and small productions, it’s certainly worth getting hold of at least a bottle. A most generous singularity.

2021
Pujanza Añadas Frías 2021 is unveiled as a white wine with a delicate structure and a refined aromatic nuance. Olfactory, it unfolds a spectrum of scents wherein one can discern ripe fruits, intertwined herbal and spiced notes against a backdrop of zesty citrus. On the palate, it introduces itself with a vibrant acidity and a creamy texture that gently envelops, unveiling an elegant harmony and a lingering finish that beckons further savouring. A complex white wine, with a protracted and dry denouement.

Pujanza Añadas Frías 2016 is a creamy white wine with an impressive nose of citrus fruit, notes of white fruit and hints of limestone. On the palate it’s flavorsome, easy to drink and fresh. A wine with an unctuous texture and a very pleasant acidity. The finish is lingering and mineral.
