About Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino
The Godfather, Casablanca, Back to the Future, Gilda... There are classics that will never go out of fashion. And just like in the cinema, the same is true in the world of wine. This is the case of Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino, the traditional and well-known red wine from Tuscany, Italy.
When we talk about Montalcino, we have to mention the typical red wine from this town, located in the south of the province of Siena. The production area, classed as a Denominazione di'Origen Controllata, meets with the boundaries of this village where numerous winemakers, including Poggio Antico, have been making this wine since the 19th century. It all started when local growers began experimenting with Sangiovese, (a native grape known in the area as Brunello or Brunellino), which has great aging potential. In fact, the Vide de Siena Classification Board issued a report on one of these wines, made with grapes from 1843, which had been aged for 32 years. The document stated that this wine was perfectly preserved, showing hardly any changes over time.
In those years, there was I Poggi, Madre and Le Martine, three properties that joined together in 1976 and became the origins of today’s Poggio Antico. The Brunello di Montalcino made by this winery starts life in the highest hills of the entire denomination, south of the village of Montalcino, where the 35 hectares of vineyards are located. Since 2020, all of them have been organically cultivated, without chemicals, with organic fertilisers and always working by hand. The combination of the soil (mainly calcareous and galestro), together with the mild and dry temperatures, results in different microclimates and microterroirs, where Sangiovese reveals unique and exclusive nuances, colours and aromas. These unique features are held onto at all times. For this reason, the harvest dates are different for each plot, depending on their ripeness, and will be worked separately. All grapes, regardless of vintage, will be selected. This is just the first step in an exhaustive examination that will also include a sorting table, as soon as the grapes reach the winery, and an optical sorter.
Finally, Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino is processed and vatted separately, depending on the plot. After fermentation, it is time for aging, with a minimum of 2 years in French oak barrels and one year in the bottle (as established by the denomination).
As Coco Chanel, the famous French fashion designer said, “Fashion comes and goes, style goes on forever.” And this is true with Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino. An immortal, timeless classic that will always be a good choice.
2017 | Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a concentrated, flavoursome, red-coloured red wine with an orange rim. The nose is very intense, with aromas of coffee, bitter chocolate, bitter orange and spices (clove, cinnamon). The palate is tense and powerful, with well-integrated tannins. Long and fresh finish. |
