About Pingus
Dominio de Pingus is a small vineyard in the D.O. Ribera del Duero run by the Danish agricultural engineer and oenologist Peter Sisseck. They follow traditional production methods, have very low production, and focus on making all their wines the highest quality. The result of this is Pingus, today one of the most sought-after and well-known wines in the world.
The grapes come from selected old Tinta de Toro vines between 50 and 70 years old. The vineyards are small with very scarce production, encompassing only 5 hectares in the towns of Pesquera and Roa.
The grapes are collected manually and they only select the grapes that are at their optimum ripeness, which gives the wine a very special character, very fruity and concentrated.
Pingus ferments completely naturally, thus maintaining the aroma and flavor of the grapes before then being put in barrels for malolactic fermentation. The barrels come from Darnajou cooperage in Bordeaux, known as the best cooperage in the world. Two new barrels are used to make Pingus. The first new barrel is used for the malolactic fermentation and the second new barrel is for its ageing.
Pingus has now become an object of desire, one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Its first vintage earned 98 Parker points, but it wasn't until a few years later with the 2004 vintage that it became one of the first five Spanish wines to get the highest acknowledgement: 100 Parker points.

| 2017 | The 2017 vintage has been characterized as being hot and dry. Low water reserves at the start became more severe during the months of July and August, when conditions were extremely dry except for some heavy rains towards the beginning of the harvest. But without a doubt the defining moment of the year was the frost that affected much of Ribera del Duero on April 28 immediately following budding, resulting in weak plant mass. This affected plant growth and flowering for the entire year resulting in production losses between 70 and 80%. This devastation was followed by some very hot months in June and July. Because of these issues, the grapes of this vintage have been smaller in size. Peter Sisseck described it as, “an early harvest characterized by ripe aromas, great extract and low acidity.” Due to the heavy frost that occurred in Ribera de Duero, they’ve had to seek out new areas in the DO, such as Burgos and Soria, for the production of PSI. | |
| 2007 | Very tasty. High concentration of fruit. Spicy notes with a mineral aftertaste. Very noticeable but high-quality tannins. Pretty picota red colour. High robe. Intense. Black fruit, plums and nuances of red fruit. |
|
| 2003 | Upon the palate, one discerns the presence of cherries and blueberries, underpinned by a robust tannic structure, full-bodied and flavorsome. The finish is exceptionally prolonged. A deep black hue with hints of purple. The nose reveals scents of blackberries, cherry liqueur, plums, red forest fruits, a mineral quality, and phenolic nuances. |
|
| 2001 | In the mouth, it is structured, powerful and silky. Great acidity and plenty of fruit. Intense maroon-cherry red colour. High aromatic intensity, with very ripe red fruit and very marked toasted hints. |
|
| 1999 | Soft attack with presence of the fruit which is perceived in the nose. Concentrated wine with a long finish. Dark ruby red colour with dense tear. Very concentrated aromas. Blackberries, plums, spiced notes and tobacco. |
