About Picchioni Fior del Vento Sangue di Giuda dell’Oltrepò Pavese
A windflower is a mountain flower that, when spring arrives and the snow melts in the lower part of the high Pyrenees, emerges shining on the ground of meadows and forests. A plant that grows at altitude and withstands low temperatures, but is also delicate and sensitive to any change. And this is how Andrea Picchioni, a winemaker whose winery is located in the municipality of Canneto Pavese, in the Lombardy wine region of Oltrepò Pavese (Italy), cares for his vineyards like wild flowers. Since the 1990s, he has been working to recover ancient varieties with the utmost respect in his 9 hectares of vineyards.
In homage to this alpine flower, Picchioni Fior del Vento Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese is made, a sweet wine produced from the historic Croatina, Barbera and other red grapes grown on the mountain slopes of the Solinga Valley. Cultivation is organic and the presence of trees is always essential to offset the carbon dioxide produced by mechanical methods. In the winery, after a short maceration in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, fermentation is stopped using cold to maintain the desired level of residual sugar. The wine is then decanted in an autoclave for refermentation, bottled and left to settle for a few months before being sold.

Picchioni Fior del Vento Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese 2020 is a light sweet wine with an attractive ruby red colour with a fragrant nose of ripe red fruit and notes of aromatic forest herbs. On the palate it is sweet without being treacly. A harmonious wine, with integrated acidity and an ample and pleasant mid-palate. |
