About Petrakopoulos Mavro Mavrodaphne

When someone mentions Greek wine, we immediately think of retsina; a white wine that is usually cheap, with a pine resin flavour that is very popular among tourists. However, the truth is that Greece has a much longer winemaking tradition than its neighbouring countries. Kefalonia, a spectacular island in the Ionian Sea, made the most popular wines in the whole Mediterranean, before colonisation, wars and poverty wiped them out. Now, a new generation of winemakers wants to recover this status and with a vision to showcase the rich diversity of grapes and vines, they are recovering local varieties and ancient practices. This is the story of Petrakopoulos, a winery in Thiramonas, a village in the south of Kefalonia, where Nikos Petrakopoulos and his winemaker Kiki Siameli are doing their bit for the island’s cultural promotion by offering a rare collection of young and aged wines in a limited number of bottles.

One example of these rare wines is Petrakopoulos Mavro Mavrodaphne an impressive wine made within the P.G.I. Slopes of Aenos. Made with vines of the native Mavrodaphne variety aged over 40 years old, this wine is organically cultivated with completely organic treatments. Once the grapes are ripe, they are harvested and selected by hand. In the winery, vinification involves a long extraction and fermentation is carried out with native yeasts. The wine then ages for 12 months in French oak barrels before being bottled with minimal sulphur.

So, starting with local varieties, minimal intervention and sulphites under the lower limit, Petrakopoulos Mavro Mavrodaphne is a real asset that has managed to recover the prestige and fame of the legendary Greek wines and has managed to put Kefalonia on the radar of the prestigious Decanter wine magazine.

2019

Petrakopoulos Mavro Mavrodaphne 2019 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of black fruit, spicy notes and herbal hints. On the palate it is exuberant, flavoursome and well structured. A medium-bodied wine with noticeable acidity, marked tannins and a harmonious finish with hints of bitter chocolate.
