About Muga Selección Especial Reserva

Where there is a captain, the sailor does not command. Therefore, and because "those who keep learning stay young," it is essential to heed the experts. We, who appreciate ageing gracefully, heed their advice and opt for Muga Selección Especial Reserva.
 
The municipality of Haro, in Rioja Alavesa, is where this red wine is crafted, which, according to connoisseurs, should never be overlooked. In this area of the DOCa Rioja, the Muga winery owns several vineyards where the tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, and graciano used in Muga Selección Especial Reserva are cultivated. Here, at the foot of the Obarenes Mountains, the soil is clay-limestone, and there is a convergence of climates (between Atlantic and Continental) that results in a long and complex maturation. Only when the time is right will the harvest take place.
 
All the grapes for Muga Selección Especial Reserva undergo a preliminary selection process, moving into oak barrels where they will ferment with native yeasts. In these same vessels, they will rest for over two years until the time comes to be clarified and bottled. For this, Muga is one of the few wineries that still uses egg whites for this task, in addition to having its own cooperage where all its barrels are made and repaired. Finally, Muga Selección Especial Reserva will spend more than a year and a half resting in the bottle, in the solitude of the winery, before being released to the market.

2019 Muga Selección Especial Reserva 2019 is a red wine with aromas of ripe blackberries accompanied by spicy nuances (clove) and a subtle note of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with well-polished tannins. A red wine that retains a marked and well-integrated acidity, with a pleasant touch of oak and a long, balanced finish.
2016

Muga Selección Especial Reserva 2016 is a richly concentrated red wine exuding scents of ripe fruit, hints of licorice and tobacco, along with spicy undertones. On the palate, it reveals a robust fruitiness and an astonishing acidity that promises longevity. The finish is delightful, extensive, and subtly bitter.
2010 On the palate it is very pleasant and elegant. Sweet and likeable tannins. Good acidity. High fruit presence and certain mineral notes.

High-robe, dense and uniformed with beautiful violet tones.

Complex and elegant on the nose. We can encounter mature red fruit notes with countryside memories and certain mineral touches.
2009 An elegant long wine. It shows an embracing and warm attack and a tasty, silky and aromatic mid palate. A balanced wine with very well balanced tannins and a refreshing and integrated acidity. Long and very persistent finish with a nice spicy and balsamic after-taste.  An elegant and seductive, round wine.

Intense and bright ruby red colour with maroon edges. A wine which shows a high robe and dense slow-falling tears.

Highly intense, complex and elegant nose. Its fragrant, suggestive and expressive aromas of ripe red fruit stand out along with a wide range of sweet and hot spices. When it opens up, some smoky notes, intense toasted hints and animal reminiscences are noticed.

2005 This Muga Reserva Selección Especial is a warm, dense and broad wine. It has a good mid palate, characterized by its smoothness and elegance. The notes of fruit and good quality wood are well assembled. Good presence of tannins. Long and very persistent wine. A round Rioja.

Suggestive and elegant aromas. Quite closed at the beginning, but when it opens up it shows very elegant toasted notes and a good presence of red and black fruits. Milky and cocoa notes.
2004

The warm, friendly, syrupy mouth-feel leaves a sensation of fullness and a persistent aftertaste, characterized by the finesse of its tannins and a complex mineral component.
