About Matsu El Pícaro

Nowadays, discovering pre-phylloxera vineyards is quite the rarity. It is, in fact, something of a marvel. Typically, it is challenging to encounter vines over a century old, ungrafted onto American rootstock, that remain untouched and resilient to the aphid that devastated European vineyards in the mid-19th century. It is neither simple nor feasible. However, no one claimed it was impossible. In the northwest of Spain, specifically in D.O. Toro, it is still achievable at the Matsu winery with their wine Matsu El Pícaro

Notable for its youth and remarkable for its flavour, Matsu El Pícaro is a delightful signature red, perhaps one of the finest offerings currently available. This excellence is part of the meticulous process followed during its production, where utmost respect is given to natural cycles and processes, always based on biodynamic viticulture that is thoroughly respectful of the old vineyards (between 50 and 70 years) that are part of this venture. Thanks to this philosophy, the winemaker Raúl Acha and his team achieve a tinta de toro (also known as tempranillo) of exceptional quality, cultivated under an extreme continental climate, with intensely cold winters and exceedingly dry summers.

Matsu El Pícaro is harvested by hand in small crates during the first fortnight of October. The grape clusters are crushed and placed in concrete tanks with a capacity of approximately 15,000 kg. In these vessels, Matsu El Pícaro will ferment at a controlled temperature, striving to preserve the freshness that so distinctly characterises this wine. Nevertheless, concrete will not be the only material Matsu El Pícaro comes into contact with, as once the alcoholic fermentation is complete, it is transferred to French oak barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation. Here, it will rest for about three months before bottling (unfiltered and unclarified).

Matsu El Pícaro is a tribute to the D.O. Toro and its people, who for centuries have maintained a close relationship with wine, keeping this bond more vibrant than ever with its renewal.
