About Luna Gaia Logistilla Nerello Mascalese
"Orlando Furioso" is an epic poem penned by the Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto, first published in 1516, recounting the adventures of various characters, chiefly the knight Orlando, who loses his sanity due to his love for the beautiful Angelica. Regarded as one of the masterpieces of Renaissance literature, it also serves as an inspiration for Luna Gaia, a project born from the collaboration between the Cantina Orsogna cooperative (a winery in Abruzzo) and BioGaia (a collective of biodynamic Sicilian farmers). The winery, located in Sicily, strives to capture the essence of the terroir in every bottle, much like Ariosto did in depicting the richness of his characters and landscapes.
Honouring this tradition, the label of their wine Luna Gaia Logistilla Nerello Mascalese illustrates a poignant scene of the knight Orlando heartbroken before a tree on which his beloved's name appears. A single-varietal wine, organically produced from the nerello mascalese grape variety grown on the slopes of Mount Etna on volcanic soils. It is cultivated organically and in accordance with lunar cycles and, when the grape reaches its optimal ripeness, it is hand-harvested and swiftly taken to the winery. There, they are meticulously selected and gently crushed. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, and afterwards, the wine matures on fine lees for 6 months in these same tanks before being finally bottled.
In this way, Luna Gaia Logistilla Nerello Mascalese invites wine enthusiasts to explore a world of flavours and emotions, where each bottle narrates a story that melds the cultural heritage of Sicily with a passion for sustainable agriculture.
