In the Siena region, there are various routes and trails that wind through the hills and mountains, providing visitors with a unique experience to appreciate the natural beauty and wine culture of this enchanting part of Italy. The “Passo del Lume Spento” ascent is a scenic route in the heart of Tuscany, surrounded by hilly landscapes and beautiful vineyards. As well as being a popular place for cycling and hiking enthusiasts thanks to the spectacular panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside, it is a unique place for cultivating the Sangiovese variety. Vineyard cultivation here faces different climate conditions compared to lower altitude areas and can vary widely in terms of character and style. Le Ragnaie, an estate that lies over 28 hectares, has a vineyard right on the Passo del Lume Spento ascent, a plot that reaches 621 metres above sea level and where they make their wine of the same name: Le Ragnaie Passo Del Lume Spento Toscana Rosso.

This is a full-blooded Sangiovese that is made within the IGP Rosso Toscana and where the maker, Riccardo Campinoti, has managed to make the most of such high altitude. The estate’s vineyards are organically cultivated and the winemaker focusses on respecting the land and the surrounding ecosystem, minimising the use of synthetic chemicals and encouraging a more natural and sustainable approach. In the winery, the grapes ferment in a traditional manner at controlled temperatures in concrete tanks and macerate for 90 days. Finally, Le Ragnaie Passo Del Lume Spento Toscana Rosso ages for 36 months in 25 hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels.

The significant temperature variations between day and night, the mineral richness of eroded soils and the intensity of sunlight result in a red wine with a unique character. On the palate it is savoury, elegant and well structured. A medium- to full-bodied wine with noticeable acidity and silky tannins. On the palate it is long, deep and persistent.
