In 2001, Oronce de Beler started working for La Revue du Vin, one of the best French wine magazines. And he was captivated by it; that is why, in 2004, he decided to begin studying viticulture and oenology at the Lycée Viticole. A year later he met David Juilliard, a viticulture student from Beaune, and together they began their adventure. He firstly decided to move from Paris to Vosne-Romanée (in the east of France, 30 minutes from Dijon). This is where they settled in a 16th century house with a small cellar dug into the rock and bought grapes from Jeremy Seysses, the owner of Domaine Dujac. Then in 2005, the first production of La Maison Romane emerged. A few years later, in 2017, La Maison Romane moved to Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the Côte d'Ors, Burgundy (also in east-central France), where it has become one of the leading domaines of the A.O.C. Fixin. A picture is worth a thousand words; or in this case, a sip. And the La Maison Romane Fixin Les Clos red wine is the best way to prove it.
To date, De Beler still doesn’t own any vineyards of his own. Nor does he need to. Oronce de Beler believes that winemaking and expertise are just as important as viticulture and the countryside. And he’s right! The key requirement for this to be true is finding high quality grapes, cultivated in the traditional way by local vignerons and following the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture (including ploughing with Percheron horses). It is therefore entirely logical that the grapes are harvested by hand, with an exhaustive selection process of the Pinot Noir, both in the field and when they reach the winery.
Likewise, at La Maison Romane, fermentation is a very special process, starting with the whole bunches. All wines are fermented with native yeasts. At the beginning, in the first moments, only gentle pumping over is carried out (to avoid breaking the skins and the berry), but when the yeasts have done all their work, stronger pumping over is used to release all the remaining sugar, thus extending the work of these microorganisms. The rest of the work is carried out by gravity, bottling La Maison Romane Fixin Les Clos without sulphites. Finally, aging lasts for 15 to 19 months in Tronçais French oak barrels. “In the beginning, we tore our hair out trying to make the best wine in the world. But we are not here for that: a great wine is one that comes into our lives to give us an unforgettable moment”.
2019 | La Maison Romane Fixin Les Clos 2019 is a supple red wine. Olfactorily, it is expansive and fruity, with a concentrated bouquet featuring hints of strawberry. On the palate, it is dense and full-bodied, possessing a well-defined structure. It retains its fruity essence, with an intricate blend of fruit flavors. Culminates in a prolonged finish. |
