About La Gutina Idonéa

Have you ever heard of “Pie Franco” (ungrafted) vineyards? You must have. These are vines that survived through the phylloxera crisis. This tiny insect, which attacked the plant starting at the root, arrived from America and almost wiped out every European vineyard. In desperation, the only solution was found in American vineyards, which were not destroyed by the insect, and were finally able to save the situation. However, even with so much grafting, there were still some vineyards that were not attacked by phylloxera; vineyards that did not have to be grafted and that have been maintained over the course of the past two centuries. Some of these can be found in the D.O. Empordá. And some of them are worked by Bárbara and Joan Carles in their winery, La Gutina.

In total, this couple maintains eight hectares of vineyards, planted between 1953 and 1968, where La Gutina Idonéa was born. Made with Hairy Grenache, this is a totally natural red wine made through minimal intervention. Both simply guide the natural fermentation process, where they show the world what this variety and this denomination are capable of. Their work begins in the vineyard, between 90 and 100 metres above sea level, in the municipalities of Sant Climent Sescebes and Espolla. Since ancient times this area has had a connection to wine, because right here in Empúries there was a Greek colony where wine trade was a fundamental part of the economy. And it was no coincidence. The mixture of soils in the area, granite and poor in organic matter, together with the Mediterranean climate, mild winters and hot summers, make this enclave the perfect place for grape ripening. That and the Tramontana wind, which comes from the north with force, lashing the vines. All cultivation is done by hand, the soil is enriched with organic fertiliser and pests are combatted with natural and alternative remedies.

The Gutina Idonéa is harvested and taken to the winery where it is also processed without any kind of intervention. Once the must has been made, it is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments spontaneously with yeasts native to the area, showcasing all the flavour and character of the D.O. Empordá. Finally, all wines, including La Gutina Idonéa, are bottled unfiltered and unclarified. So if you have never tasted a wine made with “Pie Franco” grapes, this is your perfect opportunity.
