About Karamolegos Terra Nera Assyrtiko

On an island where the sea merges with volcanic rock and time progresses at a serene pace, Artemis Karamolegos has discovered the precise rhythm to interpret Santorini's most iconic grape: the white assyrtiko variety. Terra Nera, meaning "black earth," is more than a name: it is a declaration of love for the "aspa," this special volcanic soil, rugged and fertile, which has nourished the vines for centuries.

The story of this winery is also the tale of a family. From the first canava (as a winery is known in Santorini) built in 1952 to becoming the island's most dynamic winery, Karamolegos has evolved without losing its roots. Artemis, the founder's grandson, blends respect for the past with an innovative outlook, passionately— in the best sense— dedicated to extracting every possible nuance from the assyrtiko variety and showcasing its versatility, strength, and purity.

Terra Nera Assyrtiko is a vibrant white wine born from lower altitude vineyards, with young vines that, nonetheless, exceed half a century in age. Predominantly crafted with assyrtiko and a small portion of the aidani variety, which are vinified separately at low temperature in stainless steel, resting on their lees for six months to gain creaminess and complexity. The result is a white wine that combines tension and freshness, crisp white fruit, and a minerality that recalls the volcanic origin of the island.

Perfect for accompanying a meal by the sea, with grilled fish, seafood, or even vegetarian dishes with grilled vegetables, Terra Nera Assyrtiko is an invitation to enjoy the Mediterranean in its most radiant form, a gateway to the Karamolegos universe that demonstrates even the most accessible expressions of the assyrtiko grape can be full of character, emotion, and beauty.
