About Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage

Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage is a single-variety red wine made with the Pinotage variety by the Kanonkop winery in the Coastal Region (South Africa).

Kanonkop Estate is a fourth generation family-run estate with 125 hectares of vineyards that are comparable to a French Premier Cru. The name of the winery is inspired by the hillock (kopje) from which a cannon (kanon) was fired in the 17th century to alert farmers that commercial ships were arriving at the port. Located within the prestigious Simonsberg-Stellenbosch wine of origin denomination (South Africa), a region that has recently produced the best red wines in the country, it is currently one of the most prestigious wineries in the area, being awarded the highest scores by the sector’s great gurus.

Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage comes from one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa. These are old vines planted in 1953, on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, with granitic soils and a Mediterranean climate that are ideal for growing top quality grapes. They use traditional agriculture and, to ensure maximum quality, they carefully monitor the whole life cycle of the grape, culminating with the harvest.

Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage ferments in open concrete tanks at a controlled temperature between 28ºC and 30ºC. It stays there with skins for 3-7 days. Once extraction and alcoholic fermentation have finished, the wine is placed in stainless steel tanks to begin malolactic fermentation. Finally, it is left to age in new 225-litre oak barrels for 18 months.

Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage is a pure wine from one of the oldest Pinotage variety vineyards in South Africa made by Abrie Beeslaar, one of the most prestigious winemakers in the area. A powerful but elegant red.

2017 Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage is a concentrated red wine with refined aromas of ripe red and black fruits, floral notes of rose petals and pleasant touches of menthol spices and chocolate. On the palate it is medium bodied with mature, fine and elegant tannins. A bright, complex, powerful and sensual wine with a lively saline acidity.
