About Jordan Cobblers Hill
A limited edition. Pure South African essence. This is how we would describe Jordan Cobblers Hill, a red wine made from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties by the Jordan winery.
Jordan Cobblers Hill was born in the Costal Region, specifically in Stellenbosch, one of the most important districts of this country’s key winemaking hub. Foreign investments and its university town attest to this, making it the current home of the academic wine world. Today, this is largely backed by three centuries of tradition and expertise. Part of this story has been written by the Jordan winery, founded in 1982 by Ted and Sheelagh Jordan. This couple came from the world of footwear (Ted was the third generation of a family of shoemakers); but little by little they managed to carve out a niche for themselves in the world of wine. Today Jordan Cobblers Hill is a recognition and tribute to this family’s history.
The company is currently in the hands of Gar Jordan (son of the founding couple) and his wife Kathy, who run the business and the 164 hectares in Stellenbosch Kloof, an area with different elevations and characteristics that facilitate the successful growth of several varieties (both red and white). This is partly aided by the Mediterranean climate with maritime influences (False Bay is 14 km away) and the direct impact of the Benguela current. This causes the climate to become milder, with less temperature contrasts and less risk of frost.
In the case of Jordan Cobblers Hill, the 24-year-old vines grow west-facing, at an altitude of 220 metres. Once in the winery, Jordan Cobblers Hill ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC (82ºF). At this stage, the secret of this company lies in the three daily pump overs, which allow colour to be extracted. Once transformed into wine, Jordan Cobblers Hill is pressed and racked by gravity into 225-litre French oak barrels where it will undergo malolactic fermentation... but not all barrels will pass the test: only the best will be selected. Finally, the selected wines will be aged for 24 months in the same barrels. Only the best of the best to honour and remember tradition and family work.
2016 | Concentrated and elegant. These two adjectives are the main ones we would use to present Jordan Cobblers Hill 2016, a very rich, medium-bodied and elegant red wine. The nose is very subtle, with only the typical varietal aromas of plum, cassis, coffee beans and very mild spices standing out. The palate is lush and viscous, with silky tannins. Very elegant and spicy finish. |
