About Galia Clos Santuy

There are vineyards that do not feature on the grand wine maps... but have existed longer than many appellations. This is the case in several areas of Soria (V.T. Castilla-León), where ancient vines endure, having been excluded from the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, yet never straying from its winemaking tradition.

With this concept, the Galia project was born in 2009, initiated by the French viticulturist Jérôme Bougnaud, who began working with small plots in villages like Piquera de San Esteban. In 2022, the project evolved and was renamed Galia Soriana, focusing exclusively on the vineyards of the Soria province, with David Calvo leading the vineyard and wine production.

The heart of the project is a mosaic of very ancient plots, many over 100 years old and on their own roots, planted at high altitudes and in challenging climatic conditions. Within them, tinto fino, albillo mayor, and other minor varieties coexist, preserving the traditional diversity of the vineyard.

A fine example is Galia Clos Santuy, a single-vineyard wine originating from a solitary 1.12-hectare plot planted in 1930 in Piquera de San Esteban. Situated at 980 metres altitude with sandy soils over a limestone base, it combines tinto fino with a small proportion of albillo mayor.

Harvesting is done manually with cluster selection. After destemming, both varieties ferment together spontaneously in stainless steel, with a maceration period of approximately 18 days and gentle pump-overs. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel, refining its texture.

Galia Clos Santuy is a precise, fresh, and profound wine that embodies the essence of these Sorian vineyards, where tradition and landscape continue to dictate the rhythm of the wine.

2022

Galia Clos Santuy 2022 captivates with its depth and charisma. Upon approach, a spectrum of sensations unfolds where blue fruits, such as blueberries and blackberries, take centre stage, accompanied by a delicate mineral touch akin to a refreshing breeze. The nose is also delighted by subtle aromas of freshly picked violets and a gentle hint of cocoa and spices. On the palate, its firm and vibrant structure is a dance between freshness and a chalky texture, culminating in a long finish that reveals a hint of dried herbs. This wine is recommended for its intriguing complexity and profound expression.

2016 Galia Clos Santuy 2016 is a concentrated red wine with complex aromas of ripe red and black fruit, spicy notes and mineral touches. On the palate it is very expressive, elegant and silky. It has a long and persistent finish.
