About Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi Riserva

Will there be life in space? And most importantly, will they want to drink wine? For now, we don’t know whether or not the wine will survive outside earth’s orbit. What we do know for sure is that we will continue to love it here for generations to come. Ensuring the vine survives is the aim of Franco Marí Ricci, president of the Italian Sommelier Foundation (FIS), who is working to discover how vines and wines cope in space. This project, called Wine in Space was presented at the annual International Wine Culture Forum 2022 and will involve sending a selection of vines and bottles into space to see how they are affected by the lack of gravity.

There are three wines taking part in this mission, with only a couple of vintages selected: Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (2006 and 2015), Gaja Barolo Sperss (1988 and 2017) and Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Riserva Piano di Montevergine (2012 and 2015). It is worth noting that this selection has been chosen taking into account that the entire country of Italy should be represented. So, Campania and southern Italy are represented by Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Riserva Piano di Montevergine, a single-variety Aglianico (a variety native to the area), of which only a few single vintages are produced.

This is mainly because Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi Riserva is a very special wine, whose grapes are grown in Piano di Montevergine, one of the winery’s most famous vineyards. This vineyard lies in the area historically known as Irpina, in the south of Campania, in the province of Avellino, within the D.O.C.G. Taurasi Riserva.

Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi Riserva is carefully harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks. A maceration will be carried out here for 3-4 weeks, extracting both the colour and the polyphenols that will pass from the grape skin to the wine. This will be a guarantee, since most of these elements are antioxidants. Thanks to this, the red wines can withstand long periods of time in barrels, as in the case of Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi Riserva (with 24 months in French oak barrels and another 24 months in the bottle).

At the moment there is still no date for the space launch. What is already safely tucked away in a safe are the three bottles that the wines sent into space will be compared with. For the moment, while we wait for updates, we can keep enjoying Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi Riserva here on earth.

2016

Totally exotic and full-bodied with silky tannins. You are sure to end up falling in love with the mouthfeel of Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi 2016, one of Feudi di San Gregorio’s most interesting reds. This is a mature red wine, to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, with fruit and spices. The nose is very fragrant, with delicious notes of dates, red fruits and mustard seeds. It would be interesting to keep it and taste it in a few years.

2015

Feudi di San Gregorio Piano Montevergine Taurasi 2015 is a concentrated and ruby red wine that is bright with garnet touches. The nose is very intense and fragrant, with aromas of cherries, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and anise. These hints combine perfectly with the ripe black fruit and nut flavours. Full body, with firm tannins and slightly dry. Long and persistent finish.
