About False Bay Bushvine Pinotage

False Bay is a beautiful natural inlet in South Africa lying between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The name, which has been used for more than three centuries by sailors themselves, comes from the mistake they made when, returning from the east of the Dutch East Indies, they confused it with Table Bay, which, although farther north, was very similar. It is in honour of this iconic bay that Paul Boutinot set up his own False Bay Vineyards project. A winery born in 1994 through the search and rescue of grapes from old vineyards overlooking False Bay, in the WO Stellenbosch (Coastal Region), and that, having been brought back from being lost in the big cooperative blends, create fantastic wines at a very affordable price.

Although Paul’s wines are now world-renowned, the truth is that this winemaker has always gone against the flow. He makes wines through minimal intervention, using native yeasts and no added acid which, although now a very common way to work, was viewed with suspicion in the beginning. With a great team behind him, including traditionalist winemaker at heart Nadia Barnard, they create wines like this False Bay Bushvine Pinotage, a single-variety Pinotage from excellent vineyards in Cape Wineland that give us the opportunity to experience wonderful, naturally balanced coastal fruit. The vines are 30 years old or more and lie in the warmest region of Paarl. They are cultivated using respectful agriculture and harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness. Once they reach the winery, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed to begin fermentation with native yeasts and, finally, the wine ages in large oak barrels for 8 months.

This False Bay Bushvine Pinotage is born under a concept of Cape terroir, a single-variety wine with a truly individual character that demonstrates that a fine coastal wine can be high quality as well as affordable.

2019

False Bay Bushvine Pinotage 2019 is a succulent red wine bursting with black fruit aromas, complemented by nuances of chocolate and a hint of spice. On the palate, it is lively, indulgent, and vibrant. This wine boasts velvety tannins, an exquisite structure, and a prolonged, immensely satisfying finish.
