About Etienne Courtois Les Cailloux Cuvée des Etourneaux

Etienne Courtois Les Cailloux Cuvée des Etourneaux is a natural, ecological and biodynamic, barrel-aged red wine made by Etienne Courtois with the Gamay variety in the Loire Valley (France).

Etienne Courtois, son of Claude Courtois, the great master of natural wines, is following in his father’s footsteps in the French town of Soings-en-Sologne. Just like his predecessor, he doesn’t use any chemicals and intervenes as little as possible in the vineyard and in the winery and although he follows the tradition of keeping the wine in the barrel for a long time, he has started to experiment with slightly shorter aging.

Etienne Courtois Les Cailloux Cuvée des Etourneaux comes from old 40-year-old vines planted in limestone soils. Chemicals have been replaced with biodynamic treatments, respecting the natural environment of fields, forests and grass. The yield is limited to 25hl / ha and the harvest is manual.

Once in the winery, the Etienne Courtois Les Cailloux Cuvée des Etourneaux grapes are gently destemmed and crushed. They then ferment spontaneously with native yeasts in used wooden barrels and age for 30 months in barrels and one year in the bottle. The wine is not filtered or clarified and no sulphur is added.

Etienne Courtois Les Cailloux Cuvée des Etourneaux is a natural red wine whose name Etourneaux (starling) is dedicated to one of the birds that benefits most from the fruits of the Courtois family. A delicate, elegant and very mineral red wine.
2013 Etienne Courtois Les Cailloux Cuvée des Etourneaux 2013 is a smooth red wine with an intense aroma of red fruit and spices. On the palate it is elegant, deep and complex. A well balanced wine, with plenty of minerality and a final iodised touch.
