About Domaine de Villaine Bourgogne Rouge

When one mentions Aubert de Villaine, the immediate association is with the iconic Burgundy winery, Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Yet, his commitment to viniculture is so profound that he has managed to allocate his time to his most personal project beyond the more glamorous Burgundy. In 1971, he established Domaine de Villaine with his wife Pamela in Bouzeron, the only appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise region specializing in white wine production using the Aligoté grape. A far more understated place to reside, where, in addition to crafting Bouzeron whites, they also produce white and red wines from Rully, Mercurey, Saint-Aubin, and Santenay. Today, under the stewardship of his nephew Pierre de Benoist, the winery continues in the footsteps of its founder, who remains as co-director and upholds the work philosophy that has made their wines renowned. Productions where the terroir is always the protagonist and man serves at the behest of nature.

One of their wines, Domaine de Villaine Bourgogne Rouge, is a single-varietal Pinot Noir originating from an assemblage of various parcels with nutrient-poor soils and rich in limestone. The natural balance of the terroir is respected and, since 1986, there has been a commitment to organic cultivation, avoiding the use of pesticides and herbicides. In the winery, the grapes ferment with 25% whole cluster in wooden vats using indigenous yeasts. Afterwards, the wine is aged for 10-12 months in barrels, of which 10% are new.

As the fruit of the most personal project of the esteemed manager of the world's most famous 'domaine', Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine de Villaine Bourgogne Rouge is a fine example of the purity and elegance of a less ostentatious Burgundy that is equally delightful. A cuvée that should be consumed young and enjoys a most affordable price point.
