About Clos de los Siete

In 1998, the renowned oenologist Michel Rolland discovered Argentina. "There are excellent terroirs everywhere, but Argentina boasts a geographically privileged position," affirmed Rolland. "Its proximity to the Andes allows for an interplay with altitude, tempering the temperatures in a sun-drenched country. Its soils, comprised of alluvial deposits from the mountain range (gravels and stones), are particularly intriguing." It could not have been better articulated. And he was not alone. The first to be swayed by his persuasive power was Jean Michel Arcaute, a winemaker from Pomerol. Following him, other friends and producers joined the venture. All of them, guided by Rolland's expertise, collaborate to create the red wine Clos de los Siete.

The true essence of this wine is captured by the malbec grape, indigenous to the region; however, it is complemented by other red varieties such as syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, and cabernet franc. The blend may vary depending on the vintage. Regardless of the variety, what is undeniable is that red grapes find in Argentina the perfect conditions for cultivation. In the case of Clos de los Siete, the operational base is established in the town of Vistaflores, located 100 km south of Mendoza, in the Valle de Uco. Here, in proximity to the Andes, Rolland discovered around 800 hectares at an altitude of 1,110 meters. This feature forms the cornerstone of the Argentine vineyard, as, according to Rolland, the high mountain temperatures help to mitigate the heat characteristic of this arid, continental climate. Additionally, the significant thermal amplitude between day and night promotes the accumulation of anthocyanins (polyphenols responsible for the red color) in the grape skins. As for the soil, Clos de los Siete thrives on sandy and clay soils interspersed with pebbles and boulders. In these highly draining soils, the vines extend their roots to a depth of one meter, seeking the water from the melting glaciers.

Clos de los Siete is crafted solely from grapes harvested on the estate (a concept known as Estate Wine). The labor is manual, and the selection is meticulous, both in the vineyard and the winery. Here, once the grapes are processed—with pre-fermentation maceration— all transfers are conducted by gravity. During fermentation, Clos de los Siete undergoes daily pumping over. Finally, Clos de los Siete is transferred to French oak barrels and vats where it will mature for nearly a year. A unique wine created in a unique place!
