About Château Fonroque

Château Fonroque is a biodynamic red wine made mainly from Merlot and with a little Cabernet Franc. It is rated as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé wine and is produced by Château Fonroque.

Château Fonroque is a winery located on the right bank of the Dordogne in the famous wine region of Bordeaux. The winery’s vineyards cover an area of some 20 hectares, 70% of which are Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. It was acquired by the Moueix family in 1930, and after being run by them for 3 generations was acquired by the Guillard family in 2017. It is one of the few wineries in Bordeaux working its vineyards biodynamically.

The vineyards for Château Fonroqueare planted on clay-calcareous soils. They are cultivated biodynamically and are harvested manually into boxes. Once in the cellar, the bunches are carefully selected so that only the best ones are vatted. Château Fonroque then ferments in thermoregulated concrete tanks, separating each plot into a different tank. During vinification, the compounds are gently and slowly extracted. Lastly, the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in barrels, 30% of which are first use and the rest second use.

Château Fonroque is a robust wine that is rich, slightly tannic and very balanced. It will age well in the bottle, so it’s best to consume it at least 4 years after the harvest date.

2022

Château Fonroque 2022 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of black fruit, violet notes, and hints of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is precise, powerful, and well-structured. It is a full-bodied yet refined wine, with silky and firm tannins and a long and persistent finish.
2014 Château Fonroque 2015 is a wine with a good aromatic intensity, with aromas of red fruit and touches of minerals, aromatic herbs, cocoa and licorice. On the palate it is tasty, balanced and structured. It also reminds us of blackberries, blueberries, chocolate and tea leaves. It is enveloping and velvety, and its finish is pleasantly long.
