About Château Cantenac Brown
In France, the winemaking tradition is being revitalised and elevated to new heights thanks to the significant investment of prominent families in renowned estates. These investments not only preserve the country's rich vinous heritage but also drive innovation and excellence in wine production. In the case of Château Cantenac Brown, an estate acquired in the early 19th century by the Scottish painter John Lewis Brown, it has been owned by Le Lous since 2019. A prestigious French family, led by Tristan Le Lous alongside the masterful oenologist José Sanfins, has spared no expense in positioning this winery and its wines in the global spotlight they deserve. The estate spans a total of 48 hectares of vineyards on the famous Cantenac plateau in Margaux (Bordeaux). An exceptional terroir with gravelly soils, which, through a reasonable cultivation approach, captures its essence in wines of very distinctive identity.
Its namesake wine, Château Cantenac Brown, comes from a 3rd Cru Classé vineyard covering 42 hectares. Old vines of merlot and cabernet sauvignon planted in 1977, whose coarse gravel soils absorb the sun's heat during the day to better reflect it at night, ensuring optimal ripening. The harvest is manual, with an initial selection in the vineyard, and once in the winery, the plots are vinified by vine and age, allowing for a precise selection of the blend. Alcoholic fermentation takes place over approximately 10 days with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels and thermoregulated stainless steel vats. Subsequently, the wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new and 40% are typically one year old. Finally, it returns to the tanks and is prepared for bottling.
In an exceptional region that produces perfectly balanced wines of superb density and magnificent evolution over time, Château Cantenac Brown is rediscovered as a great promise. A fresh, dense, and elegant wine that promises a bright future for wine enthusiasts, offering a sensory experience that captures the essence and quality of a terroir that deserves the utmost care.
