About Château Canon-La-Gaffelière

In the German tradition, in order to maintain lineage, all rights and responsibilities are usually given to the firstborn, whether in terms of noble titles, property or family assets. This means that the firstborn inherits the main position and responsibilities, and is expected to carry on the family tradition and keep the estate intact for future generations. In the case of Stephan von Neipperg, a German count and prominent vineyard owner, he perpetuates the values of his ancestors. A wonderful property in the northern Württemberg valley in Schwaigern, which has been preserved from generation to generation thanks to the succession rule of birthright. Stephan has also been recognised for his ability to transform winemaking properties and improve their quality. He is particularly well known for his work at Château Canon-la-Gaffelière in St-Emilion (France), where he has revitalised the reputation of the estate. Thanks to a meticulous approach in the vineyard and cellar, he produces high-quality wines that reflect the exceptional terroir.

His Château Canon La Gaffelière wine, a coupage of cabernet franc, merlot and cabernet sauvignon, is an example of this. Sourced from 19.6 hectares of vineyards located on the southern slopes of the Saint Emilion hills, the vines are on average 50 years old and grow on clay-limestone soil. The grapes are meticulously harvested by hand in small boxes. Once in the cellar, the grapes are selected and destemmed, and fermentation begins in wooden barrels with native yeasts for approximately 29 days. The wine then ages for 16 months in contact with its lees in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new.

The fruit of a long tradition of excellence and quality, passed down through generations, Château Canon La Gaffelière is a Grand Cru that represents the best of a winemaking tradition. A legacy of knowledge and experience that translates into elegance, structure and aging capacity.
