About Broadside Blackletter

Some children play at being astronauts; Brian Terrizzi spent his Sundays pretending to be Italian in his grandparents' kitchen. He grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA), in a neighbourhood where surnames resonated more with Oktoberfest than with mandolins, yet he already felt a connection in the midst of pots, pans, and the scents of tomato, garlic, and basil. His schoolmates called him Italian—perhaps due to the final vowel of his surname—and Brian, as inquisitive as a cat, began to delve into his heritage. Those family Sundays taught him that being Sicilian was not merely a surname, but stories shared at the table, flavours exchanged, and the enchanting laughter surrounding the meal.

After university, Brian plunged into the financial world in the San Francisco Bay Area, yet life had other plans. A party, a local wine... and suddenly an unexpected opportunity arose: to work the harvest with Kent Rosenblum, the legendary winemaker of the zinfandel variety. Within days, Brian realised his path lay among vineyards, grapes, and barrels. His dream was to craft Italian wines in California.

Thus, after a brief stint at Rosenblum, Brian ventured to Italy to study the language, cuisine, wine... and to reconnect with his roots. Years later, at Fresno State, he found the perfect partner: Stephanie, with whom he shares viticulture, wines, and life. Together they founded Broadside and Giornata, two wineries now esteemed in San Luis Obispo County, California, a region where the Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich soils allow for magic in every grape cluster.

An exemplar of this expertise is Broadside Blackletter, a wine born from low-yielding old vines of cabernet sauvignon planted in deeply mineral soils, laden with tales of ancient seas and hidden fossils. This red from the D.O. Paso Robles hails from the subregion of Santa Margarita, the southernmost and coolest part of the valley, where the climate and terroir impart freshness and balance to every cluster. The winemaking process is a ritual of patience and precision, with 24 months of ageing in French oak barrels, bestowing structure, elegance, and complexity.

Broadside Blackletter is a journey from Cincinnati to Sicily, via California. A wine embodying the curiosity of a child amidst pots and the aromas of garlic and basil, and the passion of one who transformed his roots into wine.
