About Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie

From the Brigaldara winery located in San Pietro in Cariano comes Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie, a red wine made from the Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone varieties under the D.O.C. Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, in the northern Italian region of Veneto.

The main singularity of this wine is its place of birth, in the Case Vecie vineyard. Concretely, this vineyard, located at an altitude of about 450 meters, is situated on the highest hills of Grezzana (a town 20 minutes from Verona). The 65 hectares this area is divided into (abandoned for some time) was recovered at the end of the 1990s. Nowadays, the vines grow in very particular conditions on 9 of these hectares, in two very different areas: one known as colluvi, with total exposure to the south, with silty-sandy soils, rich in organic matter (mainly planted with Corvina); and the ridges, with poorer and stony soils (where Corvinone is grown).

However, the real determining factor in this area is the climate, which is very similar to that of the mountains due to both the altitude and the proximity of the forests (which lower the temperatures). As a result, grapes ripen more slowly in this area (almost 20-25 days later than the rest of the vineyards in the area). This inevitably leads to a delay in the rest of the work, which means that both the harvest (carried out manually in the first fortnight of October) and drying the grapes take place in a cold, dry climate, slowing down dehydration and developing characteristic aromas.

After this raisining, Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie is placed in stainless steel tanks, where it undergoes fermentation in contact with the skins. At this point, the extraction of color and polyphenols for subsequent ageing will be a key element that is guaranteed both with daily pumping over and with a rack and return (an operation carried out during fermentation that consists of removing all the must that is fermenting, leaving the cap of skins inside the tank and pouring the must back in after a few hours). Once the yeasts have finished their work, Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie will be aged for two years in French oak barrels and two years in foudre.
