Red wine for summer

24/07/2013 Special moments

After our last post proposing a selection of white wine perfect to be enjoyed in summer, in this article, we want to refute the idea that red wine is not compatible with warm weather.

First of all, it is true that red wines are not compatible with high temperatures. However, if we know how to choose the appropriate wine, it can be highly enjoyable and pairing it with certain dishes, can be an optimal decision.

In summer, we recommend fruity and young red wines, with a good acidity, moderate alcohol content and a short ageing: a light red wine, with a joyful and pleasant profile. The kind of easy-drinking wine, which demands to be tasted even one degree below the recommended temperature for red wines (but not cold).

Here we have some red wine suggestions which, from our viewpoint, you should not miss this summer. Different grape varieties, different geographic origin and a common element:  maximum aromatic pleasure (also) in summer. Hope you enjoy them!

From the Designation of Origen Bierzo, we suggest Pétalos del Bierzo. A varietal wine made of Mencía with the signature of Álvaro Palacios. The variety Mencía offers light and tasty red wines with a high load of fruit aromas and Pétalos is not an exception. This is a fresh, intense wine with lots of fruit and flower notes. If you have not yet tried it, you should.

Another among our favourite varieties for summer is Bobal, the most representative in the region of Valencia and the most typical in the D.O. Utiel Requena. It provides light red wines with lots of fruit scents and a great acidity. Do not miss La Malkerida 2012, a varietal wine made of Bobal with low alcohol content, abundant notes of fruit and an excellent value for money.

Finally, from the area of Rioja Alavesa, we recommend Luberri Maceración Carbónica, the winery’s young wine, elaborated with a traditional carbonic maceration. An absolutely recommendable blend of Tempranillo and Viura (white grape variety).

Who said that red wine was not for summer?

In our next post, we will try to discover the best rosé wines to enjoy during holidays. See you then!
