About Bien de Altura Ikewen

In the year 2020, following the pandemic caused by the Coronavirus, the Spanish Monarchs, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, embarked on a tour across the various autonomous communities of the country to assess the overall situation. Amidst numerous visits, strict protocols, and grand receptions, there was also time to dine. The menu featured only the finest offerings from each region. And it was here that a Canarian red wine, Bien de Altura Ikewen, managed to make an appearance. Since that royal uncorking, things have never been the same for Carmelo Peña, although it must be said that this wine was already enjoying considerable international sales. After all, what came first, the chicken or the egg? When it comes to quality and excellence, the sequence of events is inconsequential.
 
Discussing Carmelo Peña and his venture is as thrilling as tasting his wines. After Chile, Duero, and Bierzo, it is now the turn of Gran Canaria, his birthplace, where Carmelo has some very clear objectives: to revive the old abandoned vineyards. To this end, he will start in the northwest of the island, in San Mateo, his preferred area, where the vineyards are cultivated on slopes, between 1,100 and 1,460 meters above sea level. For now, Carmelo does not own any vineyards (as the price per square meter on the island is exorbitant), but this does not prevent him from implementing his wholly organic and biodynamic farming methods, which always aim to maintain the utmost respect for the grape. In the case of Bien de Altura Ikewen—which means origin in the Amazigh language of the Berbers—it is a vineyard of ungrafted vines, facing northwest and southwest, on volcanic soils that ultimately give the wines a distinctive touch. At this elevation, far above the mountains, the island's desert climate dissipates, with the cool, moist wind allowing the grapes to ripen later and maintain their acidity.
 
All processes and tasks are carried out by hand, starting with the harvest and ending with less than a year of aging. In the interim, Bien de Altura Ikewen is minimally handled, as Carmelo is an advocate for minimal intervention: a portion of the bunches are macerated whole for 40 days, while another portion (which is destemmed) spends the same amount of time in contact with the skins; afterwards, both are gently pressed to extract a quality must, and then transferred to stainless steel tanks where fermentation will begin. In this same tank, where indigenous yeasts will do their work, Bien de Altura Ikewen will rest for nearly a year. Finally, it is bottled without filtration or fining, adding only a small amount of sulphur. We wouldn't want anything or anyone to disturb this wine, worthy of royalty, would we?
