About Bhilar Plots Tinto

Bhilar Plots Tinto is an organic, barrel-aged red wine made by Bodegas Bhilar with the Garnacha Tinta, Viura and Tempranillo varieties in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

Bodegas Bhilar is the personal project of David Sampedro, an agronomist who, having travelled all over the world, decided to set up his own winery in the town where he was born. In Bhilar, Elvillar in Basque, a town known for having the highest percentage of old vines in Rioja, he built his small winery integrated into the landscape, with a sustainable design that works with solar energy and is surrounded by 100% ecological vines.

The vineyards are the main asset of the Bhilar Plots Tinto wine. These are old vines lying 646 metres above sea level that have been organically cultivated since 2006. In addition, they also use biodynamic techniques to care for and vivify the different soils and since 2014, work in the vineyard has been carried out by horses rather than tractors. This work in the vineyard aims to express the different types of soil, exposures and altitudes of the estate in every bottle of wine. Once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, the harvest is carried out manually. 

In the winery, the Bhilar Plots Tinto grapes are destemmed, gently pressed and placed in concrete tanks to begin spontaneous maceration and fermentation with native yeasts. The wine then ages for 18 months in 225 and 500-litre oak barrels.

Bhilar Plots Tinto belongs to the village wine collection that Bodegas Bhilar makes as a tribute to these exceptional winemaking lands. An intense and deep wine with a soul that, despite the aging, has perfectly integrated wood.
2017 Bhilar Plots Tinto 2017 is a juicy red wine with aromas of red fruits like cherries and blueberries and herbaceous notes of thyme, rosemary and clove. On the palate it is medium bodied with a black and red fruit flavour. It is a structured wine with fine tannins and a refreshing acidity. The finish is pleasant and persistent.
