About Barón de Ley Reserva

Each year, Decanter magazine hosts the Decanter World Wine Awards, a unique occasion not only for winemakers, who see all their hard work and effort recognised, but also for wine enthusiasts, who at this event discover the finest wines (many of them at a remarkably low price). The task of uncovering these gems falls to the 300 members of the judging panel. It is certain that among so many experts there is not always agreement; however, sometimes (albeit rarely) they all concur on a great wine, as was the case with Barón de Ley Reserva. “The bouquet of aromas that blends leather with delicate notes of liquorice, exotic spices, and the sweetness of cinnamon,” along with its “impeccable structure,” were the characteristics highlighted by the panel of specialists.

At Barón de Ley, they are particularly adept at crafting Reservas and Gran Reservas. Since its inception in 1985, achieving excellence in these wines has been the primary goal of this family-run winery of the D.O. Ca. Rioja. Even its name pays homage to the expression 'Ser de Ley', synonymous with a job well done, with trust and always with the highest quality. The tempranillo, graciano, and maturana are the three varieties used to produce this red wine. Most of these grapes are cultivated in the Finca Mendavia, a vineyard named after the town of Mendavia, in the Rioja Oriental region. Specifically, this vineyard, spanning 164 hectares, is situated at an altitude of about 400 metres, with calcareous soils and a purely Mediterranean climate. In this regard, the team at Barón de Ley, led by Pablo Tascón and Gonzalo Rodríguez, exercise great care during cultivation, always striving to implement responsible practices.

Barón de Ley Reserva is harvested manually, selecting the best clusters at the winery. After this initial phase, Barón de Ley Reserva is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments at a controlled temperature. Once this process is complete, Barón de Ley Reserva is racked and pressed, moving to barrels where it will rest for a minimum of 18 months. This step is of utmost importance, as the secret to crafting excellent Reserva wines lies in the annual renewal of the barrel stock (approximately 31,000 in total). After this period, Barón de Ley Reserva is bottled and left for another two years to reach its optimal point.

A single bottle and hundreds of memorable experiences in every glass. You don't need to be an expert to succumb to the allure of Barón de Ley Reserva.
