"Some have been hasty in their conclusion that mankind is inherently savage, and that it requires society's construct to tame his nature, when in fact, there is nothing as gentle as man in his primitive state, when nature has positioned him equidistantly from the folly of the beasts and the pernicious enlightenment of civilized man." With these words penned by the philosopher Rousseau in 1755, he crafted the myth of the "Noble Savage," an ideology that depicts individuals living in a state of nature, that is, outside the influence of civilization or modern society, as beings of innocence, peace, happiness, and harmony with the environment. Similarly, the team at Azul y Garanza idealizes nature in its primal state with their Naturaleza Salvaje wine range. These productions aim to capture the grape and terroir's purest and most authentic essence by minimizing human intervention in the winemaking process, with the goal of reproducing the wildest essence of nature.
Situated in the Navarrese village of Carcastillo, within the sphere of the Bardenas Reales, Europe's largest desert, they unveil a less trodden region where the arid landscape, dry climate, and stark temperature contrast between day and night yield grapes of high concentration and perfect balance. And the finest way to reveal this to us is through this Azul y Garanza Naturaleza Salvaje Tinto, a red wine where nature acts unfettered. Born from vineyards over 100 years old of Garnacha planted on clay-limestone soil, they are cultivated using regenerative agriculture, a method focused on restoring soil health, promoting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change through sustainable farming practices. The harvest is done by hand, and the selected grapes are immediately transported to the winery. There, vinification is carried out with minimal intervention. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and thereafter, the wine is aged for 6 months in 500-liter barrels and amphorae.
Inspired by the beauty and richness of the landscape provided by the Bardenas Reales desert, Azul y Garanza Naturaleza Salvaje Tinto is the most genuine expression of the working philosophy and thought process of this young and talented trio of vintners that form Azul y Garanza. It is a true hallmark of their identity which, as they themselves advocate, "nature is wild, or it is not."
