Monte Real Gran Reserva Edición Limitada 1998 is a concentrated red wine with complex aromas of ripe black fruit, liquorice notes and hints of oak, vanilla and spices. On the palate it is velvety, unctuous and enveloping. A well-developed wine with good acidity, fine tannins and a long, lingering finish.

About Monte Real Gran Reserva Edición Limitada

Luis Zapatero, president of Bodegas Riojanas, says “In the 19th century and for centuries before that, Rioja wine was bad, coarse, as Philip II wrote in the 16th century, and it was used to make cement for houses in Cenicero in the 18thcentury.” However, at the end of the 19th century, the entrepreneurs of today’s century-old wineries, including Bodegas Riojanas, began to work differently in order to reach new standards of quality and earn the reputation that Rioja has today.

With more than 125 years of history, Bodegas Riojanas is a company based in the prestigious town of Cenicero, in La Rioja, but with wineries in Toro, Rueda and Rías Baixas as well. One of their great wines is Monte Real Gran Reserva Edición Limitada 1998, a limited edition wine from a great vintage and made in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. This wine comes from the El Monte vineyard which lies 430 metres above sea level, with Tempranillo variety vines that are over 40 years old. These vines are planted on clay-limestone soils with lots of pebbles and maximum yields of 4,000 kg/ha.

Monte Real Gran Reserva Edición Limitada 1998 stands out for the long skin-contact grape maceration, up to 30 days, and, most importantly for the wine’s long aging in new American oak barrels for up to 40 months with racking every 6 months.  

Given that Monte Real Gran Reserva Edición Limitada 1998 is a wine from a very special vintage and there are no more than 23,000 bottles, this is one to keep for special celebrations or for those who collect great classic wines.
